Exploring iRise Studio
iRise Studio is the authoring tool for iRise projects. It is a desktop application that allows you to create simulations (in Simulation View) and write requirements or annotations (in Document View). The capabilities of iRise Studio are extended by the iBloc™ API, which enables the creation of custom widgets and actions that can be used in iRise projects.

The Studio Welcome Screen
The Studio Welcome Screen appears when you first open iRise Studio. From the Welcome Screen, you can:
- Create a new project
- Open an existing project
- Open a recent project
- Watch Quick Start Videos
- Launch the Getting Started Tutorial
- Explore a sample project
- Access the iRise Community (by clicking the “Get Help” link)
If you do not want the Welcome Screen to appear each time you launch iRise Studio, select the checkbox in the lower left corner of the Welcome Screen. You can also choose whether or not to display the Welcome Screen from the Studio Preferences dialog by selectingEdit > Preferences from the iRise menu in Windows oriRise Studio > Preferences in Mac OSX, and either checking or unchecking the Show Welcome Screencheckbox under General Preferences. You can open the Welcome Screen at any time from the View menu (or the Help menu in Studio versions prior to 8.10).
Note: You cannot interact with the Studio workspace, including the main menu, while the Welcome Screen is open. To bypass the Welcome Screen and activate the Studio UI, click the Close button in the lower right corner of the Welcome Screen.
The Studio Environment
The Studio environment is organized around its two primary purposes: to simulate user interfaces, and to capture text requirements. To make it easy to switch between these activities, two “views” — Simulation View and Document View — are available when you are working in Studio. Toggling between them is simply a matter of clicking the associated button above the workspace or pressing F9 on your keyboard (Command-Fn-F9 on a Mac).
Note: There are two project components for which the Simulation/Document View paradigm does not apply, both of which are covered elsewhere in these tutorials: Datasheets and Notes.
The Studio Workspace
The workspace is the main area in the middle of the Studio window where scenarios are built, pages are assembled, masters are created, decisions are defined, datasheets are maintained, and requirements are written. For components like pages and clouds, the gray area surrounding the page is called the canvas. Navigation and data widgets (e.g., Action, Link and Record widgets) are placed on the canvas, and are therefore referred to as Canvas widgets. Page Layout and User Input widgets (e.g., Text, Image, Text Area and Button widgets) are placed on the page, and are therefore referred to as Page widgets.
Common Studio UI Elements
The following UI features are present in both Simulation and Document View.
- Main Menu Bar – The Main Menu Bar is in the upper left of the Studio UI, and provides access to most of the commands commonly performed in Studio.
- Directory Panel – Appearing on the left side of the Studio workspace, the Directory panel is your main navigation tool within your projects. It shows all of the components (aka chapters) in the project you have open in Studio, and enables you to create new components, organize them in folders, and perform other functions on them. You can also drag components from the Directory to perform various tasks, such as creating a page from a Template, adding a Master to a page, or adding a Link or Record widget to a page.
- Formatting Toolbar – The Formatting Toolbar is in the upper right of the Studio UI, and provides easy access to common formatting attributes, such as font and background color. It also enables you to apply a style to content in your workspace.
- Status Toolbar – The Status Toolbar is beneath the workspace and allows you to do things like change the zoom level, navigate through the various chapters in your project, switch between the different selection tools, and open and close the Comments Panel.
- Comments Panel – The Comments Panel is located between the main workspace and the Status Toolbar, and is used to manage reviewer feedback added either in Studio or via iRise Reader.
- Context menus – Context menus are available in many places by clicking the right mouse button (Control-Click on a Mac).
- Launch button – The Launch button is to the right of the Simulation/Document View toggle buttons. It opens an iRise Reader window in your default Web browser and presents the project component currently displayed in the Studio workspace. What appears in the Reader is now a live simulation that can be reviewed and manipulated like a real application.
The vast majority of the work you do in iRise will take place in Simulation View. All of your scenario flows, page layout components, interactions, and simulation logic – everything involved with the visualization of your requirements – will be added and configured in Simulation View.
The following Studio UI features appear only in Simulation View:
- Widget Toolbar – The Widget Toolbar is just below the Formatting Toolbar and allows you to add different types of components to your workspace. The contents of the Widget Toolbar will depend on the activity you are performing in Studio. For example, while you are working on a page, all of the Page Layout, User Input and Canvas widgets will be available. While you are mapping out a scenario flow, the Widget Toolbar will contain only scenario elements – Pages, Decisions, Clouds, etc.
- Details Panel – The Details Panel sits directly below the Directory, and is used to modify the attributes associated with the various parts of your simulation. For example, the Details Panel is where you change the properties of a Table, manage the alternate views of a Dynamic Display, or add events to a Button.
- Widget Panel – The Widget Panel is on the right side of the workspace, and contains any iBlocs (custom widgets/actions) you have imported into Studio (in iRise 8.5 and later). These iBlocs can be dragged onto a page from the Widget Panel, and then configured in the Details Panel.
Document View is the view in Studio that allows you to write annotations or requirements related to your simulation. You can organize your requirements hierarchically and associate them with specific page widgets. You can also apply basic formatting and add hyperlinks.
