New Standish Group CHAOS Report:
68% of Projects Fail

Worst Failure Rates in a Decade Tracked in Industry Survey

The latest survey results for software project success have been released by the Standish Group in their 2009 CHAOS Report. "This year's results show a marked decrease in project success rates, with 32% of all projects succeeding which are delivered on time, on budget, with required features and functions" says Jim Johnson, chairman of The Standish Group, "44% were challenged which are late, over budget, and/or with less than the required features and functions and 24% failed which are cancelled prior to completion or delivered and never used."

"These numbers represent a downtick in the success rates from the previous study, as well as a significant increase in the number of failures", says Jim Crear, Standish Group CIO, "They are low point in the last five study periods. This year's results represent the highest failure rate in over a decade"

HealthMEDX Uses iRise Software to 'Visualize' New Healthcare Products

HealthMEDX, an Ozark, Mo.-based software provider, has signed on to use visualization software from iRise to help develop customer relationship management, census, clinical electronic health record and financial information products for its core customer base of more than 3,300 extended care facilities.

“iRise is a critical part of our strategy to improve product quality and gain competitive advantage in an industry that is undergoing incredible transformation,” said Jim Atteberry, CEO of HealthMEDX, in a press release. “The single biggest issue with delivering software is communications. The greatest leverage that iRise enables is improving communications at the front-end of the process, which will help us eliminate rework and speed delivery.”

Dan Woods of Forbes.com Discusses the Paradigm Shift Happening Because of Visualization

The modern development paradigm has shifted from the waterfall model, in which the creators of software pretend they know what is needed up front, to agile development, in which software designers admit they don't know what is needed and then gather as much information as fast as possible (see "The Humble Developer").

This week the JargonSpy argues that so-called high-fidelity user-interface simulation techniques accelerate software development, reduce the cost of running an agile development cycle and improve the quality of feedback. This should be big news for anyone spending even a small amount of money-developing software for end-users.

In Her SearchSoftwareQuality.com Blog, Jan Stafford Discusses How Visualization Enables Picture-Perfect Requirements

In this post, Jan shares excerpts from her interview with application visualization expert, Maurice Martin, president, COO and founder of iRise. Application visualization is a paradigm-changing technology and approach for software development, in Martin’s opinion. Business analysts are no longer just reviewing text requirements, they’re “now rapidly iterating functional prototypes directly in front of the business stakeholders,” he told me. Until business analysts, developers and users can see, interact with and fully experience the application, they can really only guess at the requirements, Martin said and then continued...
