BEA Launches Developer Extensibility Program to Help ISVs Integrate with BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1

Over Thirty Partners Offer Controls Designed to Extend BEA WebLogic Workshop Development Environment to Quickly Integrate with BEA's Innovative New Platform

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- September 22, 2003 -BEA Systems, Inc. (NASD: BEAS), the world's leading application infrastructure company, today launched the BEA Controls and Extensibility Program, which is designed to help independent software vendors (ISVs) easily and quickly integrate with BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1. As of today, thirty-three industry leading ISVs have signed up to offer BEA WebLogic WorkshopTM extensions and controls - reusable software components that can unite development, integration and third-party software assets through a single development environment. BEA WebLogic WorkshopTM is an integrated visual development environment and runtime framework that is designed to enable developers at all levels, not just J2EE experts, to rapidly create, test, and deploy service-oriented, enterprise-class applications and Web services on the BEA WebLogic Platform.

The BEA Controls and Extensibility Program can provide ISVs with free software, technical resources, testing services and marketing support to help make it easier for ISVs to reach millions of Java developers and accelerate the adoption of their applications within the BEA customer base. The program is designed to help make it easier for developers to customize the WebLogic Workshop development environment to better suit their needs and provide ISVs with a standard infrastructure for building and integrating applications and technologies within the BEA WebLogic Platform.

To date, thirty-three ISVs have joined the program and have committed to building controls and extensions for BEA WebLogic Workshop across various markets such as application management, business intelligence, and content management, enterprise instant messaging, and packaged applications. Companies include, Actional, Actuate, AND, Appium, Attachmate, Blue Titan, CanyonBlue, Cognos, Computer Associates International, Confluent, Covalent, Cyclone Commerce, Documentum, Elata, E.piphany, FileNet, Incomit, iRise, iSpheres, Interwoven, Kapow, Minq, MobileAware, NEON Systems, OpenCloud, Salesforce.com, Sandcherry, Ubiquity, Ulticom, Volantis, Wily Tech, Wysdom, Yahoo!.

"By making WebLogic WorkshopTM available to our 7,400 customers and 100,00 subscribers, as well as our independent developer community, we are helping enterprises to extend salesforce.com and create new composite applications with faster time to value and lower risk than ever before," said Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com. "Together, salesforce.com and BEA are working together to combine the simplicity and capabilities of sforce with the sophistication of Weblogic Workshop, helping developers to quickly be successful in their salesforce.com integration and extension projects."

BEA will offer a breadth of technical and marketing resources to help ISVs establish a business model to create and broadly distribute commercially available controls. BEA's Control and Extensibility program provides ISVs with the following resources to be successful with WebLogic 8.1TM, including:
  • Workshop Extensibility Development Kit provides the documentation, sample code, and testing harness necessary to create custom controls, IDE extensions, or taglibs that are designed to easily integrate and operate with WebLogic Workshop 8.1. To Download a free version go to: http://dev2dev.bea.com/products/wlworkshop81/workshop_ext.jsp
  • Validation, designed to ensure quality and consistency for controls created through BEA's Controls and Extensibility Program;
  • Broad distribution through BEA's Premiere Component Gallery, which is hosted on dev2dev.bea.com and through Component Source, the world's largest marketplace and community for reusable software components.

In addition, BEA is delivering its first solution using controls for a specific vertical industry, the telecommunications market. Telecom and mobile service providers require the ability to rapidly develop and deploy new services, in order to keep pace with customer demand, create new revenue opportunities, and drive down costs. By using the controls already created and provided by BEA's group of telecom focused ISVs, service provider customers can more quickly, easily and cost-effectively create and deploy their service offerings.

"Integrating with BEA's WebLogic Platform through the controls architecture can bring significant value to the customer and to us. Customers recognize that services built with reusable software components are very beneficial to their bottom line. And because BEA is so widely used in the telecommunications market, our association with BEA and this program has helped us get better traction and exposure at multiple, globally recognized, service provider customers," said Jeff Liebl, Vice President, Marketing & Product Management, Ubiquity Software Corporation.
