iRise Fusion ‘07-Better Systems Lead to Improved Healthcare at M.D. Anderson
Posted by Tom Humbarger on October 11th, 2007

O’Dell Hutchison, a business analyst from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, presented a case study on their use of iRise.  M.D. Anderson is part of the University of Texas system and treated 74,000 people with cancer last year.  M.D. Anderson also employs more than 15,000 people.

M.D. Anderson wanted to reduce amount of time clinicians were removed from the floors while accommodating both the inpatient and outpatient business processes.  They also wanted to reduce development time, improve communication between stakeholders and developers and shorten the requirements cycle time.

To measure the impact of iRise, they used a previous project as a baseline.  The baseline project was a nursing vital signs application that took 10 months to gather requirements using the old ‘fashioned’ approach.

Their approach to using iRise inclued:

  • understand workflow
  • develop low-fidelity simulation
  • develop use case model
  • develop high fidelity simulation
  • write use cases and develop UI specs
  • obtain sign-off

They handed off a requirements package to their developers which included:  the simulation, requirements matrix and business rules, use cases and UI specs.  While the developers were coding the application, the BAs wrote test cases and test plans.

By incorporating iRise, M.D. Anderson was able to reduce their requirements cycle time from 10 months to 4 months.
